Call for Proposals

This Group analyzes religion in Europe or related to Europe (Eastern and Western) in any historical period and encourages interdisciplinary, interreligious, and comparative approaches to the topic. We especially seek proposals related to the following themes:

  • The role of religion, gender, and/or nationalism in Orientalist/Occidentalist constructions of European identity

  • Religion’s function in defining or contesting national and transnational boundaries

  • Economic influences on religious change (affluence, commodification, branding, decline, crisis, etc.)

  • The study of religion in European universities

  • Managing religious diversity in early modern and modern Europe

  • Proposals for complete sessions related to Europe in some fashion, or related to another theme not listed above. Successful proposals will be considered for publication in the peer-reviewed Journal of Religion in Europe (Brill)

Mission

This Group is designed to serve as a forum for the examination of religious issues related to the social, cultural, and political development of Europe. Its guiding principles include a commitment to scholarly dialogue across disciplines, a comparative spirit sensitive to Europe’s religious diversity, and a transhistorical appreciation of the full trajectory of the European experience.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposer names are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee members during review, but visible to Chairs prior to final acceptance or rejection.
