Call for Proposals

This Group invites papers on any aspect of religion and the “black Atlantic” (as defined by Paul Gilroy) or the “Red Atlantic” (as defined by Jace Weaver, American Indian Quarterly, 35:3) — such concepts looking at the circulation of African/African American or western hemisphere indigenous bodies, ideas, technologies, cultural artifacts around the Atlantic basin, and cultural exchange with Europeans/Euro-Americans to 1900. Topics might include, but are not limited to:

• Syncretic religions


• Prophetism


• Missionization


• Interactions between black and Red Atlantics


• For a possible cosponsored session with the Religions, Medicines, and Healing Group, any aspect of traditional indigenous medical knowledge or healing rituals and practices

Mission

This Group focuses on theoretical, methodological, and conceptual issues in the study of indigenous religious traditions the world over. Though particularly interested in interdisciplinary approaches to the study of indigenous religion, we are primarily grounded in the “history of religions” approach as it concerns phenomenological and historical analysis of indigenous traditions. The Group is also concerned with the interface of indigenous religious traditions and modernity, colonial and postcolonial conditions, and local and global forces that shape the practice of indigenous traditions.

Anonymity of Review Process

Proposer names are anonymous to Chairs and Steering Committee members until after final acceptance or rejection.
